VJ Panelling – How to use it successfully in your home

by | Nov 12, 2019 | Industry Trends

Tongue and groove wall panelling, also referred to as VJ Panelling, is one of the easiest and most cost efficient products you can use to transform your space. ‘VJ’ stands for Vertical Join and the linear nature of this style of wall panelling can enhance the height of any room! Used most often in scandinavian, coastal or boho homes, VJ panelling can create a feature in any style home if you follow these general guidelines.

Trying to create a Boho inspired space?

If your chosen space sings Boho luxe then a Vertical VJ panelling is the one for you! Be punchy with a bold colour choice or go dark as charcoal is never a miss with a boho luxe style. Whatever you choose to do, be intentional about it and don’t be scared of colour! Colour is your strongest asset when creating a moody bohemian space.

Check out this wall panelling inspo from the ‘Three Birds Renovations’ project ‘Bonnie’s Guest cottage’. Bonnie has never been known for choosing bold colours like this Dulux ‘Frontier’ green but what a difference it has made to this boho luxe living area, am I right? When you face your fear of bold colours you will find the most beautiful outcomes – also the added texture.

Scandinavian retreat more your vibe?

If scandi is your game than VJ linear is your name! Scandi has become one of the most popular design styles we’ve seen sing in 2019 and what you will notice is that most of these projects feature some sort of linear VJ or Tongue and Groove panelling. I’m going to show you some examples that speak the scandinavian retreat language. The one thing to remember with the scandinavian style is that it’s all about calm, texture and paying homage to natural materials. So unlike Boho luxe, no punchy in your face colours! Use whites on your panelling to give the room a hint of added texture or a muted soft green, blue or grey are always safe choices.

Catherine Heraghty, Owner and Creative Director of ‘The Stables’, is the queen of Modern Scandinavian design and does VJ panelling better than anyone else I know. She has perfected the placement and use of white tones on VJ walls and feature joinery pieces as a way of adding texture to any room.

Wishing for coastal calm?

Horizontal Tongue and Groove panelling is the way to go, as it is a reminder of the shiplap commonly clad on the exteriors of beach shacks. Always use soft calming tones of blue, grey or white when designing a coastal getaway. You want to mimic the feeling of the ocean and the beach but don’t fall into the trap of that classic and outdated yellow and blue colour palette! We are going for a modern beach retreat not a 90’s beach shack.

Another stunning project by the very talented Three Birds Renovation team is ‘house 4’ a beach chic home with calming textures for day’s. One of the biggest features of this project is the horizontally clad staircase with built in bench seat, painted a stunning soft grey. A perfect example of how to do calm beach retreat and without looking like a tacky beach shack.

What’s the difference?

Can’t I just paint my plastered wall a feature colour? Why go to all the effort of installing the VJ Panels too? Well the wall panelling gives your room texture and a feature wall some depth, which is important in creating dimension in your space. Still not convinced? Let me show you how much of a difference it can make.

If you have been following my journey you will know that I offer all my clients 3D renderings of their space, I’m going to show you a render with white VJ and a feature colour VJ and you can make your own mind up about whether it’s important to include a pop of colour in your next project.
